Collaboration Art: A Surreal Time

During lockdown, time seemed to drag on and on.
I left negative space for the 2 other artists to continue this piece.

Mixed media: fabric, gears, beads, washers and lock washers

Collaboration Art #3 Sculpture

Somen Debnath created a stunning wood sculpture of 3 circles called Hope.

Malavika Mandal Andrew added the wonderful digital collage lock.
I created two different two sided pieces to add above and below Malavika’s lock in the holes of the circles so the viewer will get different points of view. # 1: House/ Eye The house reveals my mood during the pandemic of my upside down world. It is raining only under the umbrella inside the house!
The other side is a hand embroidered eye and that was also machine quilted. I cut out a hexagonal shape inspired by the shapes in Somen’s sculpture and also layered it with hexagonal net to show I was peeking outside while feeling imprisoned during lockdown.
# 2: Side 1 Corona virus
Side 2: Leaf with a light of hope
Materials: Cotton, net, sheers, beads, trim, yarn
Techniques: applique, hand embroidery and free motion machine quilting need to add to the sculpture

Final art: side1
Side 2

size: 19x9x8 inches

Collaborative Art Project 20-21

Locked in Squares and Rectangles

Artist 1: Malavika Mandal Andrew
During the pandemic I was locked in and around squares and rectangles. Rooms, doors, window, bed, bed cover, pillow, framed art, floor tiles, table, kitchen platform, shelves, microwave, T. V, Cell phone, etc. There was a time when I was feeling that all my family members faces are also becoming rectangular. I don't think I will get such a lovely time again to spend time with my family. One rectangle has helped to pipe through the other rectangle and caught the movements of my likes, dislikes and missing nature. Likewise the Globe is also viewed as a series of rectangular edges.

 Artist 2: Meena Schaldenbrand

Continued the circle shape with a small yo yo to fit in the square box that resulted from Malavika’s white embroidered lines. Repeated the circles as I added another yo yo as a flower to Malavika’s embroidered leaves. The yellow and red shapes looked like a roller coaster to me. So, I cut a paper roller coaster and enclosed it between 2 layers of fiberglass window screen and stitched the sandwich to the bottom right. Added a square jewel at bottom left, then two more squares and turned them on point to repeat the shapes in the rollercoastermade of fiberglass windowscreen.

Two Zero Two One , international collaborative art project

“Experiences in Lockdown”, explores the artist’s experiences in the worldwide lockdown since early 2020. 33 artists were selected and worked in groups of three to create three original artworks, and also an individual piece.
All artworks are exhibited at TASMAI, in Pondicherry, India December 5 to 19, 2021
Escaping The Lockdown is my individual art quilt. During lockdown I felt like a caged bird and looked forward to escaping it. I coped with it by immersing myself in art and sewing.
The windows and doors spell hope.

Collaborative Book

We each decided our theme and size of art and made book pages for each other. I picked Positive Vibes as my theme and chose a 4x6 size so I could also incorporate some of my postcard and ATC swaps in my project. Created a book with watercolor papers, paint, and many embellishments. When I receive my Cnandian partner's page, I will add it and finish the book. I love how its turning out!

Visual Information By Charlotte Scott is the quilt I got in exchange for my Apple Of My Eye. Charlotte, from New Zealand, has an abundance of beautiful french knots and exquisite hand embroidery. The photo does not capture the wonderful details. I am so lucky to have received it! Brenda Gael Smith, the curator of the exhibition actually spun a wheel for the fun exchange in a zoom meeting.
