"Portals" exhibit

Two of my quilts are on display with the Creative Seasons’ "Portals" exhibit.The Gift of Life art is on the first level of the University of Michigan Cancer Center until September 11, 2016. My quilts began life as positive negative images of the arches and took a different life of their own. Even the peacocks are positive negative images.

Sending my love fabric postcards

Experimented with Foil on double sided adhesive heart shapes. When I finger pressed on foil, I had lots of holes. I got better results on second try using an old credit card for a more even pressure on foil. The foiled hearts were easy to sew through but seem fragile.

Another Annual Resolution!

Tried a new technique with threads from a book, Stitch Draw  by Rosie James. 

It was designed and cut in Make the Cut software. 

Materials include net, trims,and threads.

Mistletoes!

Mistletoes! Created by stamping Alex's feet on fabric. 
The text and snow globe were added in Make the Cut software and printed on a transparency.
One of them was added to a previous Christmas quilt at the bottom left . 
The quilt was made with block swaps from the Ann Arbor Quilt Guild.
The quilt also includes hand quilted ornaments, "Twelve days of Christmas".

Divided Souls in the United States of America

The spirit of a once united country is no more.  We are split between the socialists and capitalists, and the progressives and the conservatives.We are pro choice for the rights of a woman or pro life, for the rights of the unborn. We are now a divided nation along class, gender, political party, race, and religion. The quilt is a challenge for the theme, Day of the Dead.

Materials: aluminum, beads, charms, cottons, ribbons, sequins, trims
Embossing, sanding and stitching on metals, machine embroidered hands, hand and machine quilting. Patriot font digital quilt, designed in Make the Cut software, printed on fabric.

Sharpie/Alcohol Fabric Postcard Technique

Created the background by drawing with sharpie markers, then adding drops of rubbing alcohol . The colors migrated, and blended into each other and waited till it was dry. Printed the Awesome text from Make The Cut software onto vellum, then free motion quilted over it and tore away excess paper.

A very quick and easy technique.
Serged the edges, and then top stitched  fun yarns around edges.

What Goes Around Comes Around: Life’s Infinite Struggles and Triumphs

What Goes Around Comes Around: Life’s Infinite Struggles and Triumphs will be on display at the Dayton International Peace Museum from June 29 through September 14, 2014 as part of the Peace Labyrinth: Quilting the Golden Rule show.

Peace Labyrinth is a series of 17 quilts displayed in a walk-through labyrinth format, which portray the teachings of the Golden Rule, Do Unto Others, in 17 major world faiths and humanistic philosophies.

My quilt was designed in Make the Cut software .

A gift for our Opthalmologist

A gift for our opthalmologist who helped 4 members of our family with cataracts and lasik surgery. Included an eye chart charm along with his name on the cuffs. Made the gift bag with eyeglass fabric.

The hands forming the heart were designed in Make the Cut software.

Personalized magnet shower idea

Personalized last names and initials are split Regal Fonts. They were designed in  Make the Cut  software and printed 4 x 4 " in wireframe. Shower guests colored and added embellishments like pearls and rhinestones. Some of the the backgrounds behind the name were embossed and inserted in 4x6 photorefrigerator magnet holders.

Grayscale Magnified Pinwheels

This is the first time I painted a quilt I had previously made. Some quilters have this done before...I admired them taking a risk after all the work. I wondered if I would ruin a perfectly good quilt. I am very pleased with the results.The grays make the pinwheels pop even more.

Internet Fabric Postcard Swap

The Internet Fabric Postcard Swap theme was G is for..

I created this in Make the Cut Software and used both the positive and negative images.
I cut out the positives with black fabric and filled in the negative spaces with inks.

Quilted Detroit Key Quilt

Finished quilting the I Love Detroit key quilt which was a result of two challenges..one  to use negative space and the other to use two colors.

Transitioning to Socialized Medicine

 

It began as a challenge to create a quilt version of Grant Wood's painting, American Gothic. It took on a life of its own and became much larger. It was designed in Make The Cut software and many parts including the text were cut with my electronic cutter. The buildings were cut as stencils from freezer paper and details were added with inks. The golden parachutes and clouds were cut with fused metallic fabrics. Materials include cottons, sheers, nets, velour, zipper pulls, beads, sequins, charms and trims. There is also machine embroidery and free motion quilting.
